Ragtop Doll: The Shocking and Heretofore Untold Account of How Murder, Sex & Hardball Politics Stained America's 1968 Presidential Election by Rich Halladay
Ragtop Doll is a political novel about power-people consumed by the high-stakes game called American presidential politics. It’s set mainly between February 1 and November 6, 1968.
Ragtop Doll – which opens in Bad Axe, Michigan’s Huron County jail – rapidly acquires momentum as it twists and churns through Manhattan, Stockholm, Washington, D.C., the Syrian countryside outside of Damascus, and the historic fishing village of Fiskebäckskil on Sweden’s picturesque West Coast. Center-stage is a clever, strong-willed and multi-lingual Swedish beauty, Elin Lindström, who has become a confidant of key players on both the Democratic and Republican sides of the 1968 U.S. presidential campaign ledger. Candidates for President in 1968 are the sitting U.S. Vice President, Minnesota Democrat Hubert Humphrey and a former U.S. Vice President, Republican Richard Nixon from California. Elin Lindström is a dear friend of both the Vice President and Alexander Ramsay, an advertising agency account executive with Manhattan-based J. Walter Thompson Company. Ramsay is a trusted member of Nixon’s 1968 presidential campaign team, together with other JWTers including Bob Haldeman, Dwight Chapin, Ron Ziegler and Harry Treleavan. Although high-echelon players on Nixon’s team have heard rumors about a dalliance between the Vice President and Elin Lindström, it isn’t until the waning days of the 1968 campaign that Nixon’s campaign manager, law partner and confidant, John Mitchell, learns the truth. Elin, who isn’t even an American citizen, thus seems to have potential to alter the outcome of an already tumultuous 1968 presidential election campaign. The story’s title, Ragtop Doll, is derived from the red 1968 Chevrolet small-block 350 V-8 Camaro RS/SS Convertible given to Elin Lindström by the Vice President’s chief-of-staff in September 1967. The word “Ragtop” in the book’s title refers to Elin’s car. The “Doll” is Elin herself!
