Five years is added to the time span covered by the first edition. 668 doctoral dissertations, master's theses, and bachelor's essays are represented by 200 colleges and universities in 18 countries. Included are works that deal primarily with one of the most significant composers of the twentieth century and studies that indirectly contain references to the composer.

 

 About the Author

James R. Heintze has been music librarian at American University since 1969 and has taught in the Music Department and American Studies program there.  He has written numerous articles and reviews and published nine books on a wide range of American music and culture.  His books include Reflections on American Music: The Twentieth Century and the New Millennium (2000), which he compiled and edited with Michael Saffle (Virginia Tech).  Heintze has presented papers at the American Association of Recorded Sound Collections, American Musicological Society, Music Library Association, and College Music Society.  From 1985 to 1994, Heintze was editor of the CMS series of Bibliographies in American Music, and from 1994 to 2000 co-editor with Michael Saffle for the Garland series Essays in American Music.
