Study presents references to general (i.e., non-musical) bibliographical resources, bridging the gulf between general references and those more specifically musical. The emphasis is on publications from North America and Europe, covering basic research, bibliographies, national and trade bibliographies, indexes, and union lists and library catalogs.

 About the Author

Keith E. Mixter is professor emeritus of music at Ohio State University, where he taught in 1961-91 and served as chairman of graduate studies in music.  Other institutions where he taught are the University of North Carolina, the University of Colorado, and the University of Wisconsin.  He has received degrees from Michigan State University, the University of Chicago, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, where he was music librarian in 1953-61.  Publications include editions of the music by the fifteenth-century composer Johannes Brassart--Sechs Motetten (1960) and Opera omnia (2 vols., 1965-71)--as well as An Introduction to Library Resources for Music Research (1963).  He has written over thirty articles for Musica disciplina (for which he was bibliography compiler, 1964-75), Journal of the American Musicological Society, College Music Symposium, College and Research Libraries, New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, Handwörter der musikalischen Terminologie, and Foundations in Music Bibliography.  He received grants from the University of North Carolina, Ohio State University, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.  His memberships are in the American Musicological Society (national council, 1978-81), International Musicological Society, Music Library Association (executive board, 1961-63), International Association of Music Libraries, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
